Abstract
It has been suggested that handedness is a crude but readily testable aspect of cerebral dominance, i.e. a reflection of the partition of functions between the two hemispheres of the brain, and unilateral cerebral dysfunction may exist in patients with certain forms of psychiatric disorders.
The authors surveyed the patterns of the hand preferences with 150 schizophrenics, admitted to some hospitals, i.e. Neuro-Psychiatric dept. in ChunNam University, ChunNam Provincial Mental Hospital, Kunsan Kae-Jung Mental Hospital and Neuro-Psychiatric dept. in ChoSun University.
In this study, Annett¢¥s (1970) and Oldfield¢¥s (19 71) hand preference questionnaire were used as the method for assessing handedness, and categorization of handedness was performed using the criteria established by Lishman and McMeekan (1976).
The results were as follows.
1. It was revealed that strong right handers were 115 (76. 65¢¥16). mixed handers as 35(23.300) and absent in strong left handers.
2. There was no significant difference between patients and normal control group as a whole (Z : 0. 46, df : 3, P3. In male patients, it was revealed that strong right handers were 79(7900). mixed handers as 21(21%) and absent in strong left handers.
4. In female patients, it was revealed that strong right handers were 36(72%o), mixed handers as 14(2800) and absent in strong left handers.
5. There was no significant difference between each sex groups of ;patients (X2: 0.686, df : 3, p <0.05) .
6. There was no significant difference between each sex group of patients compared with normal control group (Z : 0. 54, df : 1, p> 0.05) .
7. In first or later borns of all patients, it was revealed that strong right handers were 46 (71. 8%), mixed handers as 18(285vo) and absent in strong left handers.
8. There was no significant difference between risk group and non risk group. (X2: 1.4316, df : 1, p>0.05)
